Google has begun updating the Family Link app for parents. With the new design, parents can be able to manage the screen time and devices of their kids more efficiently. In this update, Google focused on bringing important tools to the front. This would help parents to quickly check and manage the usage of their child’s device.
New Screen Time Tab
The first tab in the app has changed. Initially, it was called “Highlights”, but now it has been renamed to “Screen time.” This tab gives parents a quick look at features like:
- Time spent today on the child’s device.
- Most used apps for the day.
Tapping on this section gives a detailed breakdown of how much time was spent on different apps. Parents can also find more information such as:
- A Device card that shows if the device is locked or in use.
- A Lock shortcut to instantly lock the device.
- Time limits and schedules for app usage.
Updated Controls Tab
The Controls tab remains in the middle. It now has Material You design updates for a cleaner look. This section provides quick access to different Google services, including:
- Google Account settings
- Google Play (for app downloads and restrictions)
- YouTube (to set limits or restrictions)
- Google Chrome and Web (for browsing controls)
- Google Search (for SafeSearch and filters)
- Google Photos (for photo management)
- Location settings (for tracking the device)
- Signed-in devices (to manage all linked devices)
Improved Location Tab
The Location section now has a more modern map design. This will make it a lot easier for parents to track their child’s device location.
Google has also made managing multiple kids and devices easier. A new pill-shaped button in the top-left corner allows parents to switch between different children’s profiles quickly.
When Will You Get the Update?
Google is rolling out this redesign with version 2.47 of Family Link on Android. However, the update is not yet available on iOS.
Google Wallet for Kids Also Rolls Out
This update comes right after Google launched Wallet for Kids. This feature lets children have their personal digital wallets with parental controls. It works on both phones and Wear OS watches in a number of countries.
These updates underscore Google’s commitment to improving family-friendly tools to help parents manage their children’s digital habits more easily.
