There comes a point in every pregnancy where your favorite jeans just won’t cut it anymore. You need something softer, with more stretch — luckily, there’s no need to trade in your denim for dingy sweatpants, as maternity jeans are more stylish and comfortable than ever.
Pro-Tip!
“When pregnant, your body is different every day, so it is important to invest in a pair of jeans that will adapt to these changes,” Sarah Ahmed, CEO and cofounder of DL1961, tells PEOPLE. She suggests prioritizing maternity jeans that are versatile enough to dress up or down, and that boast enough stretch to get you through the majority of your pregnancy.
After trying on 17 different maternity jeans for a combined 520 hours of testing, we finally found the ones worth investing in. Keep reading for the best maternity jeans from top brands at every price point, from splurge-worthy boyfriend jeans to skinny Levi’s that are affordable enough to stock up on multiple pairs.
Our Top Picks
Most Supportive
1822 Denim Maternity Better Butter Slim Straight with Bellyband
Belly band stays in place all day
Snug fit offers top-notch support without constricting or digging into skin
Material is buttery soft and comfortable enough to wear from day to night
Not too pricey and will last the majority of your pregnancy
Not a true slim straight fit — the hem flares out slightly
Over-the-belly style can be seen through fitted tops
Tired of fidgeting with maternity jeans that slip down throughout the day? Look to this ultra-comfortable slim straight pair from 1822 Denim, which stayed snugly in place even on our busiest days. The over-the-belly band hugged our tester's belly perfectly, offering a secure fit that never needed to be adjusted or tugged up. They were able to squat down, bend over, and sit in a chair for extended periods of time without ever feeling constricted — the jeans stretched with them however they moved. Over the course of four weeks, they grew with our tester; they loved how they seemed to fit just as comfortably as when they first got them, despite how much their belly had grown in that time.
They were some of the most comfortable maternity jeans our tester has ever worn, thanks to the buttery-soft fabric. While the leggings-like comfort was a huge plus, it did make these look less like classic denim, as the fit offers quite a bit of stretch. Our only gripe is we wish they came in more washes and of-the-moment cuts!

Offered in coated black and blue shades
Straight fit retains its shape well and looks very similar to non-maternity denim
Coated material isn’t the most breathable
Stretch out slightly after extended wear, but quickly retain their shape when washed and dried
If you liked to show off your favorite Chelsea boots in cropped denim joggers before pregnancy, you'll love these chic and comfortable ankle-length maternity jeans from Hudson Jeans. The straight-leg denim style boasts the perfect amount of stretch in the fabric, waistband and the side panels, which allow the material to move with you throughout all three trimesters of your pregnancy and beyond. Our tester wore these for over eight hours on multiple occasions, finding them comfortable enough to wear while running errands and cooking dinner for friends (not to mention, eating said dinner!), and stylish enough to wear out for date night.
Given how much these grew with her throughout her pregnancy, our tester felt they were worth the splurge. “I would recommend buying these jeans true to size early in your pregnancy so you can get the most bang for your buck,” she said, adding that she’s confident they’ll fit well through the end of her pregnancy and will be wearable postpartum, too.

Best Investment
Paige Denim Noella Straight Leg Maternity Jeans
Waistband stays comfortably in place without needing frequent readjustment
High-quality denim is like new after every wash, and is durable enough to last multiple pregnancies
Waistband can dig slightly into the lower belly after sitting down for extended periods
Sag slightly throughout the day, so they need frequent washing
Paige is an editor-loved brand that reliably produces luxuriously soft, long-lasting denim — and their maternity jeans are no different. We found these to be very comfortable from the first wear, with the wide-leg cut and elastic panels as major highlights.
The stretchy panels allow for plenty of flexibility to grow with you throughout your pregnancy; our tester recommended them as best for the second and third trimesters. While the waistband stays securely in place throughout the day and doesn’t require much tugging, we found that it can sometimes dig slightly into the skin after sitting down for too long. Still, our tester said she didn’t feel constricted by these at any point; rather, she found that they loosened up a bit throughout the day, prompting her to wash them frequently to keep the boyfriend style from getting too slouchy.
While the price tag is fairly steep for maternity jeans, we feel they will definitely hold up throughout multiple pregnancies, making them a worthwhile investment. Beyond that, they can be worn in all seasons, feature a fairly evergreen cut, and can withstand multiple washes and wears.

Most Similar to Non-Maternity Jeans
DL1961 Patti Straight Maternity
Crafted with eco-friendly fibers and minimal amounts of water
We love the vintage silhouette and straight fit
Stretch pockets ensure the jeans will grow with you
More rigid than most of the other jeans on this list, although they still have stretch panel pockets and are incredibly soft
Don’t offer much in the way of bump or back support
Some people may not like having a zipper or button to fuss with
If you’re devastated about having to temporarily give up your favorite straight jeans during your pregnancy, allow us to introduce you to these classic jeans from DL 1961. They boast a deceptively timeless silhouette that could easily pass for non-maternity denim if you pair them with a top and a shacket or a sweater that covers up the stretch panel pockets.
While they offer a more authentic, rigid denim look than most ultra-stretchy maternity jeans, we still found them exceptionally comfortable. “I would sleep in these jeans,” our tester gushed, saying they had never been so excited to wear a pair of jeans before, given the flattering and cozy fit. The jeans easily stayed in place as she ran her older kids to and from activities, requiring her to get in and out of the car repeatedly; they never felt restrictive and didn’t require any readjusting while out and about — as easy to wear as a pair of slip-on shoes.
Another plus is that all DL 1961 denim is crafted with sustainability in mind; while most jeans require 1500 gallons of water to produce, the brand claims this pair uses less than 10 thanks to hyper-absorbent fibers. Plus, it treats and recycles 98 percent of its water at its in-house recycling facility.

Best Skinny
Levi's Maternity Skinny Jeans
Thick material of the belly panel offers excellent support without feeling constricting
More budget-friendly than others we've tried
Pull-on construction makes these a breeze to get in and out of at any stage of pregnancy.
Front pockets aren't real, but there are two functional back pockets
Waistband can feel a bit constricting in earlier stages of pregnancy, as it sits too high on the stomach at that point
You can’t go wrong with a classic pair of Levi’s, like these dark blue skinny jeans. We loved the pull-on style, which made these easy to slip on and off, and found them to be high quality and very durable during testing, enough so that we think they would hold up well for multiple pregnancies.
Given the affordable price tag, these are perhaps the best value pick on this list. Those who appreciate extra support will enjoy the soft, thick material of the belly panel, which stays in place throughout the day. Our tester found that the band needed to be readjusted in order to give her belly breathing room after sitting down for extended periods, as the waistband was more structured than stretchy. While the jeans did allow for ample movement, she still needed to adjust them every now and then.
While the belly band was slightly stiff, we found the fabric blend to be soft and stretchy. They were very comfortable around her legs and stretched well so that she didn't feel stiff walking; they never felt compressive and maintained their shape well after every wear and wash.

Best Loose-Fit
H&M Mama Mom Loose Ankle Jean
Covered elastic waistband is a stylish alternative to classic belly bands, and could easily pass for non-maternity jeans
Slouchy style mimics your favorite, lived-in boyfriend jeans without looking sloppy
Feel super-soft and broken-in from the first wear
Great price point to try out a trendier style
Lose their shape somewhat throughout the day
Sizes tend to sell out quickly online
Boyfriend jean-lovers, rejoice! These stylish, slouchy ankle jeans from H&M Mama feel lived-in from the very first time you slip them on, and only get comfier over time. They’re ultra-comfy and crafted from a soft denim that rivals the coziness of sweatpants, according to our tester.
She found that the over-the-belly panel hugged her stomach securely without ever feeling too tight, and required minimal adjustments throughout the day. While they fit true to size, she noted that the looser style would have allowed her to easily size down.
We love the trendy covered elastic waistband, which hits beneath the waist but stays in place thanks to the belly band. These jeans are great for dressing up or down, and look particularly fashionable when elevated with a low heel. Our tester noted that they look and fit their best fresh out of the dryer, as they tend to lose their structure over the course of the day, particularly around the butt.

What to Know About Maternity Jeans
Stretch
“Stretch is key,” says Sarah Ahmed, CEO and cofounder of DL1961, who highlights the need to select a pair of maternity jeans that will grow with you as your body changes throughout your pregnancy. “A premium stretchy fabric allows for the most comfort for day-to-day activity and works with your body, not against it.” While all maternity jeans offer a fair amount of stretch, it’s up to you to decide if you’d prefer to lean on a more authentic denim style, like the DL1961 Patti Straight Maternity Ankle Jeans, or opt for legging-like comfort with the Old Navy Maternity Full Panel Kicker Boot-Cut Jeans.
Versatility
“Versatility is also a very important factor to consider when shopping for the perfect pair of maternity jeans,” says Ahmed, who notes that it’s extra important to pick a pair that’s easy to style given that you’ll be wearing them for a limited period.
“Because you won’t be wearing them for more than a few months at a time, timeless style and wearability are extra important,” she notes. Opt for a classic style that you can wear from day to night, in a wash that pairs well with everything from your favorite T-shirt to any heels that are still comfortable enough to wear.
Ahmed adds that she recommends panel-style maternity jeans as a more versatile alternative to over-belly style, which “may be too hot to wear during the summer.” Those with elastic panels “offer the most flexibility across all seasons,” she explains.

Behind the Scenes
Our team tested dozens of pairs of maternity jeans from top denim brands in order to narrow down the most comfortable, supportive, and stylish options for every need and style.
The products that earned our top scores made this list, thanks to their fit, durability, comfort, and overall value. We tested each pair over several weeks in the real world, making sure to wear them while lounging at home as well as on our most active days.
To start, we examined the product in its packaging, ensuring that there were no loose threads or buttons. We then tried on the jeans to examine the fit, and took careful note of how supportive and stretchy they felt throughout the day. We washed each pair and noted if there was any shrinking, pilling, or fading.
After our testing period, we rated each product on a scale of one to five, with five performing the highest. The products that earned the top average scores and were recommended most highly by our testers made this list and earned the PEOPLE Tested seal of approval.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
When should I start wearing maternity jeans?
Deciding when to start wearing maternity jeans is totally up to you. “Every person is different, especially depending on whether it is your first pregnancy or not,” says Ahmed. “Typically, the end of the first trimester is a good time to get maternity jeans to adapt to your growing torso,” she suggests. Plus, if you opt for a pair with ample stretch, that allows you to get the most bang for your buck throughout your pregnancy. But there’s no hard and fast rule — ultimately, it comes down to whatever feels most comfortable. “Whenever you feel like your regular jeans are tight, make the move to maternity style,” she says.
Maternity jeans can be worn beyond your pregnancy, too, so there’s no rush to swap our your regular jeans if they’re still working for you. “Each person has their own experience with pregnancy and postpartum, so it will depend on the individual,” Ahmed adds.
-
Do maternity jeans grow with you?
Maternity jeans are typically designed to grow with your bump, thanks to stretch-infused fabric. Those equipped with elastic side panels are particularly effective at adapting to your waistline as your belly grows, whereas some over-the-belly bands can be less forgiving later on in pregnancy.
-
How many pairs of maternity jeans do you need?
If you’re someone who typically wears jeans every day, you may want to invest in a few pairs of maternity jeans to get you through your pregnancy without having to repeatedly wash the same pair over and over again. Plus, that way you can explore a variety of styles that will mimic your regular denim. However, keep in mind that since you’ll only be wearing the jeans for a matter of months, there’s no need to go overboard — one to three pairs should cut it.
-
How should I wash my maternity jeans?
Denim is a sturdy fabric that isn’t meant to be washed after each and every wear — barring any major spillage, it’s best for your jeans (and the planet!) to spot-clean them in between washes. When laundry day does come around, it’s best to turn your jeans inside out first, to protect the wash and prevent color fading. Wash them on cold to preserve the integrity of the natural fibers, and hang them up to dry for best results — while some jeans can be tossed in the dryer, heat will wear down the fabric over time and can lead to shrinkage. Plus, air-drying is more environmentally friendly. As always, it’s crucial to check the care instructions of your specific garment first.
